Position Overview
Kara provides a compassionate space for those navigating the journey of grief. We are seeking a Director of Youth & Family Services to lead our Youth & Family Services (YFS) bereavement program, which provides peer-based support services for children, teens, and their families. This is a dynamic leadership role designed for a professional who combines strategic program management with a “people-first” mindset. You will lead a dedicated team and a corps of volunteers, ensuring that every operational task serves our ultimate goal: providing a high-quality, empathetic environment for bereaved youth and their families.
Qualifications:
- Mission Alignment: A deep commitment to Kara’s mission and a clear alignment with our values of empathy and compassion.
- Presence: A high degree of compassionate presence and a culturally attuned appreciation for individuals and families navigating loss.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven Leadership: 3 or more years of management experience within a nonprofit or social service environment.
- Supervisory Scope: A track record of managing professional staff and leading a mid-to-large scale volunteer corps (50+ individuals).
- Field Expertise: Direct experience in group facilitation and peer-based support models.
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and cloud-based database applications.
- Availability: Daily onsite presence in Palo Alto; requires a flexible 40-hour weekly schedule to accommodate up to four evenings per month and occasional weekends (with hours adjusted accordingly).
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic Focus: Advanced degree in a social service or counseling-related field.
- Clinical Credentials: Mental health clinical experience or professional licensure (LCSW, MFT, etc.).
- Language Skills: Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $80,000 – $86,500 per year

Director of Development at The Grief Center of New Mexico. Albuquerque, NM. Full-time.
Position Overview
This position’s purpose is to support The Grief Center (TGC) in the pursuit of achieving our mission, to provide a safe and supportive environment for those who grieve.
The Director of Development (DD) is responsible for leading TGC program advancement, as directed by the ED and overseen by the Board of Directors (BOD), by meeting ambitious fundraising goals. Serving as lead strategist for TGC fund development, helping the ED and leadership team create a multi-year plan for increasing revenue, which informs and supports TGC plans for aggressive growth in the next five years. The DD works in conjunction with other fund development team members and serves as primary staff support (in fundraising matters) for the ED and the Board.
Key elements of TGC fund development program include new donor acquisition, major gifts, annual giving, special events, and corporate giving.
Supporting elements include donor stewardship, gift entry and acknowledgement, database management, and donor research.

The Grief Center of Southwest Colorado offers grief support to 500+ clients/year through individual, family and group therapy, school-based services, response to schools and organizations following a loss, and special events. Our current budget is $500,000, with a geographical range covering 5 counties in Southwest Colorado, the border towns of northern New Mexico, and two tribal lands. We focus primarily on children and families; our rates of childhood bereavement range from 1 in 4 to 1 in 11 across this region (CBEM 2024), with high rates of suicide, substance-related, and deportation losses. We utilize a team and culturally appropriate family systems approach to our care, contracting with 14 grief therapists and providing training to graduate interns and mental health professionals.
