Children and adolescents with family caregiving responsibilities, known as “youth caregivers”, provide support to their ill, disabled, addicted, and injured family members. While the estimated 5.4 million youth caregivers in the US are under-researched and under-supported, even far less attention is given to their experience of grief. This webinar will introduce the issue of youth caregiving, focusing on impacts to education and their psychosocial development. Attendees can then expect a nuanced discussion of anticipatory grief in children providing care for those with terminal illnesses, progressive conditions, and dementia-related diseases. After the death of the care recipient, youth caregivers have been reported to experience role and identity loss, post-traumatic stress disorder, and a removal from caregiving support services—all during compounded grief. This webinar will feature the author’s own qualitative and quantitative international research with youth caregivers and will provide evidence-based recommendations for improved practice with youth caregivers experiencing grief.

Speaker Bio:

Feylyn Lewis, PhD is a native of Nashville, Tennessee and a Vanderbilt University alumna, Dr. Lewis grew up as a youth caregiver for her disabled mother. Her experience with caregiving, disability, and living life on the margins led her on a path of global research and advocacy. She has a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a PhD in Social Work. Her research focuses on mental health and resiliency in youth and young adult caregivers, and she conducts research in the US, Europe, UK, and Australia. During spring 2021, she served as the Hunt Research Director at the National Alliance for Caregiving. In her latest work with youth caregivers, she led the United Kingdom research activities of a nearly €4 million European Commission funded research project to investigate the mental health well-being of adolescent youth caregivers in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Slovenia, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Her research with youth caregivers has taken her around the world, presenting in places as diverse as Miami, Zurich, and Ljubljana, and in front of audiences as varied as schoolchildren in Nashville to academics in Sydney, Australia and policy makers in the European Parliament in Brussels.

National Alliance for Children’s Grief, #1819, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers.  State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. National Alliance for Children’s Grief maintains responsibility for this course.  ACE provider approval period: 07/20/2026 – 07/20/2029. Social workers completing this course will receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.
