Introduction to Grief Support Series | The Elephant In The Room: Preparing Kids When Someone Is Dying

April 23, 2027 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

This webinar is part of an ongoing series that will provide a foundation of introductory information for anyone working with or providing support to children, teens, and families who may be grieving. This series is not progressive; sessions can be viewed in any order.

Talking to children about an impending death can feel overwhelming, yet avoiding these conversations can deepen uncertainty, confusion, and fear. Children notice the altered routines, the whispered conversations, the difference in moods, and begin trying to make sense of it in their own way. This session equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to compassionately guide children through anticipatory grief. Attendees will explore what shapes a child’s emotional response when someone is dying and how their development influences their understanding of illness, loss, and death. Emphasis will be placed on demonstrating appropriate communication techniques, equipping participants with the skills to speak honestly with children about an impending death. In addition, attendees will develop and explore strategies to prepare children for visiting someone who is dying. By integrating practical tools and best practices, this session will empower participants to address “the elephant in the room” and walk alongside children with confidence, presence, and care during one of life’s most vulnerable experiences.
