With the continuation of mass violence exposure, it feels important to acknowledge the retraumatization that can occur in victims of mass violence. Mass violence experiences impacts primary, secondary, and tertiary victims, leading to a ripple effect of concerns for individuals and communities affected (Cowan, R. G., et. alt., 2020).  Kayla Davis M.S., LPC and Ashley Jesse, MA, LPC-S have seen this first-hand in their work with victims of mass violence and are both passionate in advocating and educating for continued care for this population. This training aims to identify signs of retraumatization in victims of mass violence and demonstrate ways to support these individuals and communities. Additionally, we will examine ways in which vicarious retraumatization may impact one’s own clinical practice and take time to identify ways to support oneself as a clinician working with this specific population.

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

Speaker Bio:

Kayla Davis M.S., LPC is owner and counselor at Cozy Cottage Counseling, PLLC. She received her Master of Science from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2019. She began her career in the non-profit world where she provided grief/bereavement support with the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas (CBCST) in various capacities for just over five years. In her time with CBCST, Kayla became passionate in working with victims of mass violence, having supported the Sutherland Springs community during her internship and the Uvalde community upon receiving her license. Kayla has been a guest on NPR speaking to the impacts of mass violence within the Uvalde community, as well as a speaker on KSAT News’ segment called 21 Taken: Uvalde’s Path to Healing.  Outside of grief work with CBCST, Kayla has supported within school settings, and became trained in Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy. Kayla has developed a deep passion for walking alongside those who have experienced a death loss. In her current practice, she is especially drawn to expressive and creative approaches that help children and their families navigate their healing journey with compassion and care. Kayla continues to support children and adults who have experienced a death loss/mass violence loss.

Ashley Jesse, MA, LPC-S currently works in Private Practice in San Antonio.  She works with children, adolescents and adults specializing in trauma, grief, anxiety, and Depression using EMDR, CBT, play and sandtray therapy.    She previously worked as Program Director at Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas’s (CBCST) Satellite office in Floresville for three years working with victims of the Sutherland Springs church shooting. She also served as a consultant to therapists working at the CBCST satellite office in Uvalde, Texas. Ashley Jesse has been a guest on Texas Public Radio with David Martin Davies discussing mass violence and its effect on children and communities.  She also has experience presenting on mass violence, trauma, and grief and loss at the annual NAGC symposium and at the Texas Association for Play Therapy’s annual conference.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers.  State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. National Alliance for Children’s Grief maintains responsibility for this course.  ACE provider approval period: 07/20/2026 – 07/20/2029. Social workers completing this course will receive 1.5 general continuing education credits.
